Founders Day at UMass Amherst

February 11, 2008

Founders Day will mark the 145th anniversary of the establishment of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. On that day in 1863, Governor John A. Andrew signed Senate Bill No. 156, creating    “… a body corporate, by the name of the Trustees of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, the leading object of which shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, … to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, in order to promote … liberal and practical education … in the several pursuits and professions of life…”

Our celebration will begin with a sampler of music and dance – everything from African dance, to jazz, to concert band pop. Afterward, you can enjoy informal entertainment by UMass Amherst student groups as we partake of lunch specialties purchased under a large tent on the plaza between Haigis Mall and the Fine Arts Center.

Browse historical exhibits, hear from campus leaders and invited guests and then, after listening to the Minuteman Marching Band, share in an enormous birthday cake to honor the proud history of our university. We hope to see you there!
